Desert Pavilion

Location: Pioneertown, California

Status: Permitted

Located in the high elevations (+5,500’) of Pioneertown, the Desert Pavilion embraces natural resources on site, creating a sustainable design, that is pleasing to the eye, and in harmony to its environemnt. Architectural language of the building manifests itself in resolving the topography, forming dynamic tiers built out of railroad ties. Passive cooling and harnesting solar energy drives the design decisions behind this simple yet elegant structure. Cross ventilation in both sleeping area and living area keeps the spaces cool in hotter seasons. The open plan offers views in both directions in the interior, yet offering privacy for the bedroom. Large through openings in essence create a shaded outdoor area in the living room that stretches between an intimate outdoor dining courtyard to a viewing platform with panoramic views of the canyon.

The open plan design creates privacy by simply placing the bathroom in the middle, separating sleeping from entertaining.
